Gordon Jewish Community Center (Gordon JCC)

The Gordon Jewish Community Center (Gordon JCC) is at the center of Jewish life in Nashville. Located on a beautiful 52-acre campus in west Nashville, it provides recreation, education, social and cultural activities for close to 2,000 member families, as well as the entire Nashville community. Like JCCs across the country (and the world), the Gordon JCC is a community center built on Jewish values that also delivers Jewish cultural content and programs.

They mail free, high-quality Jewish children’s literature and music in 4 languages to families on a monthly basis. The program also creates opportunities for PJ families to get together and connect with each other. In Nashville, we currently serve the families of more than 420 children ages 0-11 years through PJ Library (6 months -8 years) and PJ Our Way (9 years to 11 years). The program is a collaboration between the Gordon JCC, the Jewish Federation, the Temple, Congregation Micah, Akiva School, and West End Synagogue & the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.

For adults over 65 at the Gordon JCC

The Gordon Jewish Community Center’s signature programs for seniors include Thank Goodness It’s Thursday programs that combine fitness, lunch and a program, and Prime Timers. TGIT programs are different every week – just recently we’ve hosted a ventriloquist, a docent from the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, a police department representative and a doctor speaking on neuropathy. We have musicians once per month. Prime Timers meet to brainstorm upcoming activities. We go on day trips and meet for lunch.

Nashville Holocaust Memorial

In 2006 the Nashville survivor community and their descendants, with the support of many generous donors, created the Holocaust Memorial and Educational Site on the grounds of the Gordon Jewish Community Center to honor the Jewish victims of this monumental tragedy and inspire future generations to live by the principle: “Never again to us or anyone.”

Designed by architect Manuel Zeitlin, the interactive memorial provides an educational opportunity to learn about the Holocaust through the distinctive history of Nashville survivors and their families.

The site includes memorial walls inscribed with the names and personal information of loved ones, an eternal flame and symbolic sculpture of the “book of the Jewish People,” which was inspired by Holocaust survivor Irvin Limor and created by his son, Alex. The creation and fundraising effort was led by Felicia Anchor.

The secluded wooded site has proven to be a respite for personal reflection. It is open to the public and accessible during the hours when the GJCC is open. A self-guided tour is available through a series of information stations describing the memorial area as well as a printed guide.

Donations to the memorial upkeep through the Gordon Jewish forts are appreciated and can be made through the Gordon Jewish Community Center’s Holocaust Memorial Fund.
